Nikki McClure, “Start Over Time.” Paper cut. Olympia, Washington. A squirrel drey in a tree high above (where it belongs, not in my window AC where the fluffy little pea brains have been packing sticks and leaves). Like all of Nikki’s work, this image was cut from a single sheet of black paper. She creates so much depth and expression from just flat black and white. Like so much of our human and animal experience, it is simple, but it isn’t easy. To my eye, the most rewarding artworks suggest a narrative, they tell a story, in a single frame. Nikki does that. Storytelling is a shared foundation of cultures all over the globe. Verbal, pictorial and musical. I’ll be sharing more images from Nikki in future posts.
